On top of a precipitous
cliff on Mt. Ch'ilhyonsan, Chiljangsa
Temple was
built by Chajangyulsa, a respected Buddhist monk, during the Shilla
Dynasty. It was restored by Hyesokuksa, another revered monk, in
the 15th year of King Hyonjong (1014) of the Koryo Dynasty. Surrounded
by a thick forest, Taeungjon (main hall), Myongbujon (judgement
hall), Wont'ongjon and Ch'onwang ("Four Heavenly Kings")
provide exquisite sculptures with tantalizing colors. They are well
worth seeing.
