Namwon is famous as the
birthplace of Dongpyunje, a masculine style
of pansori. It was here that
many grand masters of Dongpyunje were born and trained, including the originator of Dongpyunje, Song Hong-Rok, and
well known pansori singers like Park
Cho-Wol, Kang
To-Gun and Ahn
Sook-Sun. In addition, Wang San-Ak, a great
musician of the Shilla Kingdom, created the Keomoonko, a 6-stringed zither,
when he lived on Mt. Chiri.
