(Historic Site No. 134)

Samsunghyol is a shrine where the three original founders of Jeju, Go-eulla, Yang-eulla and Bu-eulla, emerged 4,000 years ago. The sweet songs of the birds attract your attention and welcome you when you first step into this place. The clear song of these birds spreads higher over the dense forest full of 500 year old black pine, nettle and canaphor trees as the sunlight finds its way down through the branches. The tablets of the three founders are enshrined in a building called Samsungjeon and a memorial rite is held in a building called Jeonsacheong.

The trees around the holes where the three founders emerged are all mysteriously drooping down toward the holes. What's more mysterious is that the holes are never covered with snow even during the hardest snow fall. The green leaves winding around the camphor trees tell of the long period of time and seem to tell a legend. According to the legend, the three founders married three princesses from a country called Byeokrang and they lived prosperously off the land.
