Tongyeong Canal and Underwater Tunnel


ΆΡ Underwater Tunnel

The Underwater Tunnel is located between Dang sub-district and Misu 2 sub-district, Tongyeong City, and is the first underwater tunnel in the Orient built in 1932. It is 461 m long, 5 m wide, and 3.5 m high.

The flow of water on both sides of the tunnel was blocked and the sea bed was dug up to make a concrete tunnel.
It took 5 years and 6 months to complete.

"Yongmundalyang" is written at both ends of the tunnel, which means " If you pass Yongmun, you will reach the sunshine in the mountain." (In ancient chinese legend, "Yongmun" means the "neck of rapid". The legend has it that if a carp going upstream crosses this point, it turns into a dragon.)

The Tongyeong Canal, located between Dang sub-district and Misu 2 sub
-district, Tongyeong City, is the traffic route that significantly shortens the waterway between Tongyeong and Yeosu and is also called "Napoli of its Orient" for the nearby scenic beauty.
It is also called Pandemok because, it is said, during the Injin War, Japanese soldiers dug up this place, soft clay emerges when the tide is low The construction of this canal started in May of 1927 and lasted for 5 and half years until December of 1932.

It is 1420 m long, 550 m wide, and 3 m deep and vessels can pass regardless of the tide, People pass through the tunnel under the canal, and automobiles run on the suspended bridge over it. This 3-way overlapping traffic route is unique in Korea, and the surrounding spectacular view makes it all the more beautiful.
