Woljungsa temple, located in a thick forest in the east valley of Mt. Odae, is one of
the head temples of the 4th Chogyejong Sect of Buddhism in Kangwon-do
Province. It supervises 60 temples and 8 hermitages in the area.
It is believed that the temple started as a small shrine,
called Chokmyol-bogung, which was built by Jajang-yulsa (a revered
monk) at the foot of Pirobong Peak in the 14th year of Queen Sondok's
reign during the Shilla Kingdom. On the premises, there remain many
cultural assets such as Kwonsonmun Gate and the 15 meter high octagonal
nine story pagoda and seated Bodhisattva, |
