1. Poomsae

A taekwondo 'Poomsae' comprises various stance, each with its peculiar nature but each blending into the other. A 'poomsae' consists of about two dozen stances interconnected. Blocking, punching, striking, thrusting and kicking are among Taekwondo Poomsae, and these are properly carried
out   with hands, fists and feet to the vital sport of the body or target at which they aimed, and the stances   accordingly chnge forward stance, back stance, cat stance and horseriding stance, etc. as the situation requires. Most typical 'Poomsae' are
Palgwe I-VIII, Taeguk I-VIII, Goryo, Gumgang, Taebaek, Pyongwon, Shipjin, Jitae, Chunkwon, Hansu and Ilyeo.

This represents the most profound oriental philosophy from which philosophical views
on the world, cosmos and life are derived.

GORYO : Goryo is the name of an ancient dynasty in the Korean peninsula. The English name of "Korea" originated from the name of this "Goryo" dynasty with which was famed for the valiant spirit of its people which tey defeated the Mongolian aggression. Goryo Poomsae is based on spirit of / sonbae(Sonbi) which was inherited from Goruryo to Balhae and to Koryo. Songae means strong martial art and honest spirit of scholars.

GUMGANG : The word "Gumgang" has originally the meaning of being too strong to
be broken. Also in Buddhism, what can break off every agony of mind with combination
of wisdom and virtue is called "Gumgang".
The Poomsae "Gumgang"is named after Mount Gumgang, symbol of solidity. "Gumgan"

TAEBAEK : "Taebaek" is the ancient name of Mount Baekdu where the legendary
Dangun founded a nation for the first time in the Korean peninsula 4,329 years ago on Dangun calendar (1996 A.D.=4329 Dangun year).
Poomsae "Taebaek" takes its principles of movement from the word "Taebaek" which means being looked up to as sacred.

ILYEO : "Ilyeo" signifies oneness.

In buddhism the state of spiritual cultivation is said to be "Ilyeo"(oneness), in which body and mind, I(subject) and you(object), spirit and substance are unified into oneness.

2. Kyorugi

Kyorugi is an integral whole of Taekwondo. It is an wholistic physical
activity that utilizes the muscles and the joints of the entire body. In general, Kyorugi is a combat activity in which two competitors stand facing each other and compete with their offensive and/or defensive techniques.

There are two types in Kyorugi : Mach'wo Kyorugi and chary Kyorugi.
Mach'wo Kyorugi is arranged sparring that is performed in a prearranged manner utilizing the basic Taekwondo skills and applied techniques of the poomsae. Mach'wo Kyorugi helps the practitioners enhance mental focus, distance control, sense of the target, timing and accuracy. There are three types of Mach'wo kyorugi : Sebon Kyorugi, Tubon Kyorugi, and Hanbon Kyorugi.

Chayu Kyorugi is a free sparring, which requires absolute strictness in enforcing the safety rules.
There are two types of Chayu Kyorugi : Yonsup Kyorugi and shihap Kyorugi.

The most important factors in Chayu Kyorugi are agility, power, conditioning, judgement, courage, strategy, psychological elements and techniques.

Shipap Kyorugi is the limelight that enabled Taekwondo to be accepted as an official 2000 year Summer Olympic Games. In order to ensure the safety of the competitors, it is mandatory for competitors to wear head gear, trunk protector, forearm guard, shin guard, groin guard and breast guard. For fair judgement, an electronic score board and simultaneous scoring system are used.

3. Kyokpa

Kyokpa is one of methods that is used to measure the power and speed
of the practitioner vy applying a variety of taekwondo skills to boards, bricks or any chosen material with application of physical force and mental concentration.

Kyokpa is one of the most mystical aspects of the Taekwondo training experience. The bodily parts that are mostly used in Kyonkpa are the fist, knife-hand, ball of the foot, and side blade of the foot.

There are many techniques available such as single technique, multiple techniques, standing techniques, jumping techniques, aerospinning techniques, and multiple aerial techniques.

The most critical components in Kyokpa execution are technique, power, flexibility, speed, focus, and agility. Kyokpa is one of the ultimate experiences of the art. It provides a strong motivation for the practitioners and spectators to further the understanding and practice the art of Taekwondo.

4. Hosinsul

 People are easily inclined to believe the fact that Taekwondo is exclusively made up of techniques using only the legs. This very thought is incorrect, however, since Taekwondo gained popularity as a sport Taekwondo has developed into a strong sports neglecting the more emotional side and the part of Taekwondo and continues to practice and develop the art of self defence and it is also a part of the demonstration. Self defense is, when facing the enemy or when put in a disadvantageous situation, the skill to control the enemy and the skillful use of techniques to protect oneself.
